Three Lions Coach Shares The Vision: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

Ten years back, Barry competed at a lower division club. Today, his attention is fixed to assist the head coach secure World Cup glory in the upcoming tournament. The road from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach with the youth team. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He realized his calling.

Metoric Climb

His advancement stands out. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a standing for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs led him to top European clubs, and he held coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.

“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a systematic approach enabling us to have the best chance.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours all the time, they both push hard at comfort zones. The approach feature player analysis, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. He stresses the national team spirit and dislikes phrases such as "break".

“It's not time off or a rest,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”

Greedy Coaches

He characterizes himself along with the manager as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” he states. “We want to conquer the whole ground and that’s what we spend most of our time to. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of changes but to surpass them and innovate. It’s a constant process with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We need to execute a complex game that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from concept to details to knowledge to execution.

“To build a methodology for effective use in that window, it's crucial to employ all the time available after our appointment. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with each player. We have to spend time on the phone with them, observing them live, feel them, touch them. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. The team has secured their place at the finals by winning all six games and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. Now is the moment to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“We are both certain that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives from the top division,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the adaptability, the robustness, the honesty. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide a system that lets them to operate like they do every week, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.

“There are emotional wins available to trainers in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data currently. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. We are focusing to increase tempo through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

The coach's thirst for improvement knows no bounds. During his education for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, especially as his class contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. For self-improvement, he entered difficult settings available to him to hone his presentations. Including a prison in Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.

He completed the course with top honors, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included convinced and he brought Barry to his team with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the team dismissed most of his staff but not Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Chelsea was Tuchel, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he got Barry out from Chelsea to work together again. The Football Association view them as a partnership like previous management pairs.
