NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point throughout his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core issue, was not quick to announce this decision promptly following his triumph in November.

"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to directing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda voters supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live a part of me and my work," he said.

A Contentious Issue

In his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

Yet his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment even though he came from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his previous Astoria apartment.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the cost of housing outpaces the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
