The Derry Prequel Series Releases Second Ahead of Schedule on HBO Max

Audiences are thrilled for the horror series It: Welcome to Derry, that's been receiving positive feedback and drawing from themes from the broader King universe. Just one day after launch, the broadcaster announced that the next chapter will debut sooner than expected, timed perfectly for the spookiest night.

Premiere Shift Details

Kicking off on the last day of October at midnight PT, episode two of It: Welcome to Derry will launch on the streaming service, prior to its Sunday HBO premiere. Future chapters of the eight-episode season will continue to air on Sunday nights on both HBO and its streaming arm, culminating in the final episode on the 14th of December.

Series Overview

Based in Stephen King’s It universe, Welcome to Derry borrows elements from the classic book while enlarging the universe realized by director Andy Muschietti in the two It films. It Chapter One centered on young characters facing unimaginable horrors, so it’s fitting that this show upholds that legacy. Nevertheless, the first installment of the HBO series demonstrates it aimed to increase the tension, offering heightened horror than Muschietti’s films and establishing a harsh vibe for the rest of the season.

Setting and Themes

Taking place in the 1960s, this show features a fresh cast of grown-ups and kids inhabiting a seemingly idyllic town masking a evil heart. The town follows a cruel, recurring cycle—characterized by violence, bigotry, and the supernatural, as a terrifying being reappears each 27-year cycle. Although Welcome to Derry might appear like it leans too heavily to the movies on the surface, what differentiates the streaming show is its dual perspective—told from the eyes of both children and adults at the same time. Younger characters are particularly vulnerable to It's terror, but grown-ups don't escape dealing with their individual fears stemming from the town's ingrained prejudice and lurking supernatural forces.

Episode 2 premieres on the 31st of October at midnight PT.
