Wessels is ruled out for the Springboks' autumn internationals.
Springbok prop Jan-Hendrik Wessels has received a ban of nine matches for touching Josh Murphy's genitals during the Blue Bulls' URC win over the Irish province.
The altercation occurred in the 18th minute of the narrow victory against Connacht on Friday, with opposing player Josh Murphy receiving a 20-minute red card after responding aggressively by striking Wessels on the head area.
After Murphy reported the incident to the match official, the contact was reviewed by the TMO, who determined no conclusive video evidence.
The Bulls player stayed on the field until he was replaced in the later stages of the game.
Although the URC announced that Murphy's temporary sending-off was withdrawn by a governing body, Wessels was deemed to have breached the code of conduct, which declares:
"A player should not engage in actions that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship. Such behavior covers touching, pulling or compressing the genitals."
Disciplinary officials concluded that the incident met the level for dismissal and warranted a three-month ban, the shortest suspension under international rugby regulations for such an infringement.
However, Wessels' suspension was reduced by three weeks because of his good conduct prior to and at the proceedings and his good record.
Wessels and the Bulls have the right to appeal, but as it stands, the suspension will prevent the young player out of the Springboks' fall internationals against the Brave Blossoms, France, the Azzurri and Ireland.
Wessels will also miss the Bulls' URC games against Glasgow, the Lions and the Cell C Sharks, as well as Investec Champions Cup games with Bordeaux and Northampton.
Wessels has won ten international appearances for South Africa and was part of their tri-nations champion team over the summer.
The Connacht player, meanwhile, is eligible to play against the Irish rivals in this weekend's inter-provincial derby after being cleared.
