A boss of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the UK might have reached peak pizza while expanding the company into chicken products has been ousted after disagreements with its directors.
Rennie is departing after a brief tenure in leadership, and will be replaced on an temporary basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a new leader.
The outgoing executive, who was with Domino's for over 20 years, had aimed to shift the UK's biggest pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, remarking recently there was not “significant expansion” left in the British pizza industry. He noted poultry was the most rapidly expanding menu item in the world.
Sources suggest that there was tension between Rennie and the board over his approach and business vision, although Domino's announcement said he was leaving “by mutual agreement”.
In the autumn, Domino's launched its Chick 'N' Dip brand – which Rennie called a “bold new chapter” for the company – and is testing it in 210 outlets in the North West region and the province.
While the company is still intending to launch it across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it views fried chicken as an addition to its main pizza offerings.
Ian Bull, the company chair, said: “The board believes that there are a series of prospects to enhance value and value creation in Domino's core business. We are concentrating on identifying the right chief executive to direct the careful implementation of that expansion plan.”
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has millions of users in the UK and Ireland, said sales declined by 1.5 percent in the latest quarter. In the summer, it warned that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it attributed weaker consumer confidence in the period before the budget and rising wage costs for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.
Competitors are also facing challenges. Another major chain revealed the closure of multiple locations a recently, after the business behind its outlets fell into administration.
Trying to keep up with consumer trends towards balanced diets, the company has rolled out reduced-calorie options, such as its light base range of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as vegan and wheat-free pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a small has 909 calories.
Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and previously worked for the betting firm William Hill. It is understood that she does not want to occupy the chief executive role on a full-time basis.
Frampton stated: “We have a number of active growth and efficiency programs that we will be focused on implementing at pace.”
She said these involved additional efforts on the company's supply chain and menu innovation, and its loyalty scheme.
The pizza chain is also without a full-time chief financial officer until 16 March, when Andy Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer a well-known firm. Until then, Snow is interim finance chief.
