A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country struggling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was confronted by three suspects, one of whom shot at him before running away.
The purpose behind the attack has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, police said.
Police revealed that Stock was targeted as he was departing from a premises in the vicinity of the city center landmark.
He had devoted time at the property managing the setup of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, it was reported.
"It is alleged the man was confronted by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," authorities stated.
CCTV footage showed a suspect with dreadlocks and wearing what appeared to be a security uniform opening fire on Stock before running away.
The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but succumbed to his injuries across the street.
Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the assault.
Crucial forensic evidence, like spent shells, were recovered from the location.
Authorities have requested members of the public who may have have information to assist with the investigation.
"Our information indicates they traveled on foot after the attack, and police have been following their trail to find their location," stated a police chief.
His sister, Nicole Stock, stated the relatives are devastated to understand the tragedy.
"I am devastated. I cannot express the pain," were her words.
"It is clear he was a voice for many people. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were ready to tackle. This is a devastating blow."
She appealed to the public to not sharing graphic images from the scene, noting this was an extremely painful time, particularly for Stock's children.
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that premiered on a South African broadcasting platform.
Apart from his work in broadcasting, Stock was engaged in various commercial activities, including protective services, providing high-level security services and managing safety for high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also reportedly involved in real estate operations and participated in property reclaimations.
His death has sent the nation reeling and led to an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the government and political parties.
A government minister commented he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's untimely death.
"He spoke his truth without fear or favour. He even criticized me and my policies as a minister. He was a pure example of who we should be," the minister added.
A public representative said the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".
A media executive expressed that "Stock was not merely a TV personality. He was a skilled narrator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a kind-hearted individual who brought happiness and vitality to every performance. His artistic passion left an profound impact."
In a statement, the broadcaster he worked for declared Stock was known for his presence, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his memory "will endure".
