Offspring of Previous South African Leader Zuma Refutes Terrorism Accusations as Legal Proceedings Begins
The offspring of former South African Leader Jacob G Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked accusations at the start of her trial in the port city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over statements she made on social media in the past during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that came after the detention of her father.
A period of disorder in various areas of the country in the summer of 2021, including looting and arson, resulted in at least 300 deceased and led to damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).
Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of inciting this unrest and faces allegations of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.
Context of the Legal Matter
The protests were concentrated in the provinces of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the previous president's detention for disobeying a judicial ruling to testify at an inquiry into accusations of impropriety while he was serving as president.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always rejected the allegations against her, with her lawyer in the past labelling the prosecution's legal argument as weak.
She has also frequently said the accusations against her were an attempt to resolve political grievances with her father after he started his own party and competed against the ruling party.
Endorsement and Legal Defense
This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and kinship persecution" against the ex-leader and his family.
A small number of supporters from her group, her party, gathered outside the judicial building, while her parent and other group representatives participated in the hearings inside.
Her legal team has stated that the evidence presented by prosecutors is inadequate and lacks concrete grounds for a guilty verdict.
