Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Earn Initial Victories Following Player Detentions

NBA game action

Miami recorded 86 opening half scores versus the Grizzlies

Miami Heat secured a crushing 146-114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their first basketball game after guard Rozier was arrested over suspected illegal sports betting.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested as part of a extensive federal probe into sports betting. The two individuals contest the allegations.

However, the Heat were not distracted as they scored eighty-six opening half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year history.

Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and afterwards stated Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam said. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is important to all of us. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through the situation."

The Trail Blazers also secured their initial match since the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 victory against the Warriors.

"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."

League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests

Speaking about the detentions for the first time, league head Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he told a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

Silver further said an league probe into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.

"We then looked into the matter and were open regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.

"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.

"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
