Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 others sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the property near the city of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri military police.
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who ran away subsequent to the explosion was apprehended not long after. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.
The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the scene displayed the property reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
The president of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, explained the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations accrued by the property owners.
Mediators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the home. When the police reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member set off the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander informed news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Those injured by the blast comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of the state police and a emergency responder.
As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.
The official thought the explosion had happened on a floor above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to local news, noting that the three had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
