At a notable criticism, Big 12 Conference commissioner asserted that Notre Dame athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, was “completely out of bounds” for his criticisms about the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Notre Dame maintains a gridiron scheduling agreement with the ACC and is a full member in all other sports. Bevacqua has claimed that the ACC actively damaged Notre Dame’s chances to enter the College Football Playoff, instead choosing to campaigning for the spot of the University of Miami.
“The ACC does wonderful things for Notre Dame, but we provide substantial football value to the ACC, and we couldn't comprehend why you would make an effort to try to hurt us in this process,” Bevacqua remarked.
The Hurricanes eventually received the CFP invitation over Notre Dame, mostly due to securing the head-to-head contest between the two schools. Notre Dame's AD also claimed that the ACC conducted a coordinated social media campaign over several weeks indicating its preference for Miami.
Subsequently on Tuesday, Yormark addressed the comments at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.
“My opinion is that his actions has been egregious,” the commissioner said. “He is completely out of bounds in his method and if he was in the same room, I’d say to him the same thing.”
The criticism is especially notable given Bevacqua’s prominent standing. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee with the ten FBS conference commissioners, advocating for the interests of independent Notre Dame.
The commissioner further highlighted the lifeline the ACC offered Notre Dame in the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, giving the Irish a complete conference schedule and a berth in its title game.
“It has been egregious,” Yormark reiterated. “It’s been egregious criticizing Jim Phillips, when they saved Notre Dame during Covid...”
Talk had circulated about Notre Dame potentially splitting with the ACC and partnering with the Big 12. However, the commissioner's public reprimand on Tuesday appear to make such a scenario unlikely in the immediate future.
Notre Dame, who reached the CFP final last season, have announced they will decline a postseason invitation after failing to qualify this year.
