Host nation Morocco shook off a jittery beginning to defeat Comoros in the competition's first match on Sunday, thanks to the Real Madrid attacker and substitute El Kaabi in the second half.
It was a far from convincing display, however, from the heavily tipped Moroccans, who sit 97 places above the small Indian Ocean nation in the FIFA rankings and had to toil hard for the victory in rainy conditions at the national stadium.
Morocco missed an first-half spot-kick and were goalless at the interval despite controlling possession, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.
The goal arrived after Noussair Mazraoui showed great skill to prevent the ball from going out before laying it square for Brahim DĂaz to sidefoot home.
Every opening game is never easy but we improved in the second half,” commented Morocco coach Walid Regragui.
The tension was then eased by a piece of sheer genius from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only ten minutes after his introduction, the striker met a cross with a spectacular overhead kick in the 74th minute, doubling and sealing the win.
Earlier in the match, the hosts could have been the lead in the 11th minute after a penalty was given for a challenge on DĂaz. However, Soufiane Rahimi effort was kept out by keeper Yannick Pandor.
The underdogs stoutly defended against Morocco for long periods until the hosts' individual talent eventually told.
Shot-stopper Yannick Pandor made several further fine saves to limit the scoreline as the match wore on, although Comoros created a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly following the first goal, with Rafiki SaĂŻd shooting directly into keeper Yassine Bounou.
The three points was partially marred by an apparent injury to Morocco's captain, Romain SaĂŻss, who limped off in the 18th minute in tears.
The centre-back had just returned to the international setup recently after a lengthy absence due to ankle surgery.
This result continues Morocco's record-breaking run of consecutive victories to nineteen, surpassing the previous best of 15 set by the Spanish national team from 2008 and 2009.
